We welcome applications from MAs, PhDs and MD’s with at least 3 years of research training/experience who have demonstrated interest in the social aetiology of mental illness. The minimum requirement to apply is a Master's degree in a relevant field, including:
- Social and behavioral sciences (e.g., sociology, psychology, anthropology, economics, and geography)
- Health sciences (e.g., psychiatry, public health, nursing, and social work)
- Basic sciences (e.g., genetics and neurosciences, including neurobiology and brain imaging)
- Humanities (e.g., ethics, education, and philosophy)
- Other related disciplines
Applicants with existing funding, or who wish to fund themselves are also welcome to apply. Such applications will be reviewed separately from those applying for paid fellowships.
Fellows cannot be enrolled full time in an academic program during the 10-week didactic training course that begins the program.
How to Apply
To apply, provide:
1. A cover letter in electronic (soft) copy with name, contact information, and current place of studies/work (maximum two pages), summarizing past research and clinical training and experience and listing the areas of interest to be explored during the fellowship. Email with your application form and Academic CV to SAMI-admissions@camh.net. You may wish to include:
- Your research plans (plans may include development of community based research partnerships)
- Academic and/or professional objectives and outcomes
- Rationale for relevance of your research to understanding of the social determinants of mental health and addictions issues and problems
- Description of how the SAMI Training Program will help you achieve these goals
2. A completed SAMI CIHR Fellowship Application form in electronic (soft) copy, including the Consent Form (appended to the application form). View the list of SAMI mentors here. Save the form to your desktop, complete it, and then email it with your cover letter and Academic CV to: SAMI-admissions@camh.net.
3. Your Academic CV in electronic (soft) copy. Email it with your cover letter and application form to: SAMI-admissions@camh.net.
4. Transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate studies in sealed envelopes, sent directly from the school of origin to the address below. If your transcripts are not available in English, please have the institution send the transcripts directly and also provide notarized translations of the transcripts.
5. Two (2) references completed on SAMI CIHR Fellowship Reference forms in electronic (soft) copy. One reference must be written by a current/previous academic supervisor. Referees are asked to comment on the candidate’s strengths as they relate to suitability for and/or experience in research. Referees are asked not to share the content with the candidate. Provide the reference forms in sealed envelopes with the referee’s signature across the sealed flap of the envelope, or email from the referee's email address to SAMI-admissions@camh.net.
Please note that if your native language is not English and you cannot demonstrate equivalent experience, you may be required to successfully complete the "Test of English as a Foreign Language" (TOEFL) and the English Language proficiency test "Test of Spoken English" (TSE) prior to commencing your Fellowship program.
