Smoking cessation

Introduction

© 2010 CAMH and St. Joseph’s Health Centre, Toronto

The multiple, and often catastrophic, adverse affects of smoking are well known. All patients who currently smoke should be encouraged to quit and should be offered the supports that are readily available within primary care. In most cases, helping patients to quit smoking will be the single most effective health invention that primary care providers can provide.

This section provides practical information on screening, assessing and managing patients who are trying to quit smoking. It includes links to other professional resources, including best practice guides and patient information materials, including self-help resources.

This section of the Toolkit is now available in French. We will continue to develop the French language version of the Toolkit, one section at a time.
